Natural Resources Canada Awarded $47 Million in Infrastructure Funds with Solid Justification Provided by ARCHIBUS Software

Ability to accurately and quickly record and evaluate condition of 3.5 million square feet real estate portfolio gave agency edge in competing for funding

July 20, 2012 — Boston, Massachusetts

As the agency in charge of Canada’s land, minerals and energy portfolio, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) demonstrated the importance of documenting its facilities’ conditions when it won $47 million in economic stimulus funds from the Canadian federal government. The funds are being used to better maintain and upgrade its 3.5 million square feet of offices, warehouses, industrial space, and laboratory facilities.

The win was the direct result of being able to record, evaluate, and document the condition of all those properties, using the Condition Assessment application from ARCHIBUS, Inc. (www.archibus.com ), the #1 solution for real estate, infrastructure and facilities management in the world.

The implementation of Condition Assessment and other ARCHIBUS applications enabled NRCan to capture a disproportionate share of a total of $250,000,000 in funds allocated by the Canadian central government under its Economic Action Plan

Efficient Facilities Advance Sustainability, Economic Growth

NRCan plays a central role in developing policies and programs to use the country’s mineral, metal and energy resources to expand the economy and improve Canadian quality of life. They also had a compelling reason to keep their facilities (averaging 47 years of age) performing at a world-class standard, because innovative science is conducted at its facilities across Canada to commercialize research and license technologies.

Condition Assessment has allowed NRCan to go from a paper-based to an online Building Condition Report (BCR) capability, enabling a more portfolio-focused, rather than a building-focused, approach to real estate management.

Condition Assessment has also made possible the implementation of a Facility Condition Index (FCI), which provides a relative and objective measure of building condition, as well as enabling a consistent condition feedback loop with input from property managers for maintaining “evergreen” data.

ARCHIBUS Information Drives Multi-Million Dollar Results

Finally, NRCan’s Condition Assessment implementation facilitates the creation of strategic portfolio management scenarios, examining the FCIs of building portfolios, or individual buildings, to help managers identify properties for disposition.

Within days of receiving a request from Canada’s Treasury Board for potential infrastructure projects, Natural Resources Canada was able to provide an objective, national, prioritized listing with information that clearly communicated the need to upgrade their aging laboratory infrastructure.

The agency’s prompt and well-supported submission resulted in funding to make necessary improvements. In addition, it made possible over $2 million in cost-avoidance by also finding ways to  reduce space requirements for NRCan’s employees.

NRCan’s success illustrates the power of ARCHIBUS to thoroughly document building conditions and produce actionable information for improved, cost-effective decision-making that helps achieve organizational goals.
